30 years of Scottish Aquaculture

the years, appearing regularly in the press, on TV (including Tomorrow’s World) and on radio. It also hosted its share of celebrities over the years. A visit by Prince Philip in 1974 gave the Royal seal of ap- proval, MPs and the Lords were regular visitors, musicians and pop stars seeking new opportunities dropped by, future TV presenters visited early in their career, high-powered overseas delegations were a regular event. that merged the White Fish Authority with the Herring Industry Development Board to form the Sea Fish Industry Authority (Seafish), continued to deny Ardtoe (and Seafish) access to income that might have been derived from salmon farming. All was not lost, however, and thanks to its reputation Ardtoe was very success- ful in attracting additional funding for its research from a vast range of organisa- tions and funds – charitable, industrial, regional, national and international – over the years. Responding to changing circumstances and clearly voiced industry needs, Seafish refocused its research pri- orities in 2003 by starting to commission research from external providers. As a consequence, it transferred ownership of Ardtoe to the NERC-backed Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory based in Oban. Seafish maintained its commitment to supporting aquaculture through its staff, the Industry Project Fund and through its support for the Scottish Aquaculture Research Forum (SARF). Subsequently, Ardtoe entered its third phase – moving out of public ownership and becoming a private company; Viking Fish Farms Ltd.
