Scottish Sea Farms (SSF) is a leading producer of Atlantic Salmon in Scotland, with farms on the West Coast of Scotland, Shetland and Orkney. We are dedicated to the sustainable production of premium quality salmon produced in a low stress, efficient, ecologically sympathetic way and designed to meet the needs of our customers and consumers.

Scottish Sea Farms is the result of an evolutionary process that has taken place over the last 38 years and has led the development of the Salmon Farming Industry in Scotland through market differentiation, people development, infrastructure investment, quality & traceability certification and innovation.

Orkney

SSF acquisition of Orkney Sea Farms in 2007 is an excellent example of how with appropriate investment and clear business strategy a robust and sustainable future can be built for aquaculture and the local community.

Orkney has an established reputation for quality produce with Orkney provenance typically commanding a premium of 10-50% over Scottish products. SSF have invested £1.6m in infrastructure on Orkney sites since ’07, we have secured 11 direct jobs and a further 30 indirect jobs, increased production volumes and secured premium tier position for Orkney provenance salmon in UK, EU and USA retailers. SSF see potential for a further 5-6 sites in the Orkney region and are engaging with local authorities and stakeholders. Development of these sites would result in £25-£30 million investment and would create 25+ jobs supporting the local economy as well as securing a robust future for salmon farming in Orkney

People

The early days of salmon farming in Scotland were led by dedicated, motivated people who applied science and growing practical knowledge to develop a new industry. In Scottish Sea Farms we value this ethos of ‘decision at the cage edge’ and operate a flat management structure with site managers empowered and equipped to make decisions.

As farms size increases more automation has freed staff resources to develop husbandry skills and focus on fish performance. We have invested heavily on equipment and I.T. to provide staff with data to take informed decisions on how best to manage the performance of the fish and the site.
