1873 – Howietoun trout farm opened 1885 – Rainbow trout introduced to the UK 1965 – Unilever trial salmon cages in Loch Ailort


- Ardtoe chosen for Whitefish Authority Marine Farming Unit, Hunterston selected for sister unit


1966-1968 – Trials on rope mussel growing in Scotland prove successful 1970s


1970 – EWOS UK starts operations 1971 – Unit of Aquatic Pathobiology formed at University of Stirling - First Scottish-grown salmon harvested for consumption


1972 – Kames Fish Farming established 1973 – Golden Sea Produce started 1977 – Inaugural issue of Fish Farmer published - Wester Ross Fisheries started


- Otter Ferry producing 50 tonnes of salmon a year


1978 – Strathaird Salmon launched - Stirling’s Unit of Aquatic Pathobiology renamed as the Institute of Aquaculture


1979 – EWOS acquired by Alfa Laval - Andy Lane and Johnnie Noble start farming oysters in Loch Fyne 1980s


1982 – Scotland’s first commercial mussel farm started by Norrie Etherson and Janet Church 1983 – Golden Sea Produce acquired by Hydro Seafood - Scot Trout co-op formed


1985 – Johnson Seafarms started - West Minch Salmon started


1987 – TBT Banned - ASSG started


- Cultor acquires EWOS


1988 – Ardtoe produces first halibut juveniles in the UK - Ardtoe devastated by fire


1990s


1990 – First algal toxin closure in Scotland caused by PSP 1992 – Marine Harvest sold by Unilever to Marifarms


- EU legislation related to classification of waters, depuration etc introduced - SSMG started


1993 – UK joins Single Market - First Several Order granted to Scallop Kings


1994 - Marine Harvest merged with McConnell Salmon 1995 – EWOS Technology Centre opens in Scotland 1996 – Hydro Seafood GSP acquires Shetland Salmon Producers 1996 – EWOS head office moves from Sweden to Livingston 1999 – Nutreco acquired Marine Harvest McConnell - Loch Duart salmon established
