THE HISTORY OF THE UK’S ONLY FULLY-INTEGRATED SALMON PRODUCER By Paul Irving
T
he Lakeland Group is the only fully-integrated producer of salmon in
the UK, producing in excess of 60 million eggs, 14 million fry, 10 million smolts and 14,000 tonnes of quality Scottish salmon each year.
The first hatchery and smolt unit, Holmwrangle and Haweswater, were built in 1987 and utilised spring and borehole water, as well as the drinking water supply of Haweswater reservoir. The sites are as close to perfect as possible, with excellent water quality, an ideal temperature profile and a unique disease- free status. The Haweswater smolt unit also benefits from a surface water intake, which allows the farm manager to select the best temperature profile at any given day of the week. This is particularly use- ful during vaccination, when the summer temperature can be lowered to the desired level.
In 1989 Lakeland ac-
quired a controlling interest in Migdale Smolt and com- menced the development of cage production in Loch Migdale. Today this is a sub- stantial business with produc- tion sites in Loch Migdale, Shin, Merkland, Damph and Ness. It is carefully managed by the Murray family and in the very capable hands of Hugh Murray as Director / General Manager. The smolt production arm of the busi- ness is also complemented by Migdale Transport, which employs the latest technology in fish movement using trucks and wellboats.
In Argyll, Lakeland operate three freshwater units with significant investment over the last ten year period and in re- cent years has constructed a recircula- tion unit at Furnace, which em- ploys the latest
low head technology – thus saving up to 30 per cent in water requirement. This has proved a real asset at times when rainfall levels have fallen well below normal.
Marine
The Argyll area also provides Lakeland with superb seawa- ter operations, which use all the latest technology, includ- ing fully-computerised feeding and cameras in every cage. The most recent farm, near Carradale, utilises the latest in cage design and structure for the benefit of both the fish and the operator and will produce in excess of 2,000 tonnes of gutted salmon in 2011. The farm employs four local staff and provides a con- siderable injection to the local economy.
Meanwhile, in Shetland, Lakeland has substantial operations in both Unst and Hoganess – with the former site producing all stages, from broodfish to salmon.
Unst has never required sea lice treatments in 20 years of operation and was recently awarded the best farm sup- plier to Waitrose.
The filleting and sales part of the operation is based in the east end of Glasgow, near Bellshill. Expertly man- aged by Willie and Susan Liston it processes some100 tonnes of fillet each week. Willie is also Managing Director of the Lakeland Group.
Lakeland has a very loyal customer base with whom it has developed a close work- ing relationship over many years. This is built on quality, reliability and trust. We are also extremely proud of our staff – many of who have over 20 years experience in salmon farming.
