30 years of Scottish Aquaculture

Vaccinating for Pancreas Disease in Salmon - Norvax ® Compact PD by Keith Morris

In UK aquaculture health one of the major success stories in recent years has been the product development, granting of a licence and commercial launch of a vaccine for Pancreas Dis- ease in salmon – Norvax ® Compact PD. With Pancreas Disease (PD), arguably one of the most poten- tially damaging diseases in salmon, the efforts and investment to develop a vaccine has been pretty much continuous since it was first isolated in 1993. What followed were many years of field and scientific research by Marian McLoughlin and her team at The Fish Diseases Unit, part of The Department of Ag- riculture and Rural Development (DARD) at Stormont, Northern Ireland. Co-funded with Intervet the research was underwritten allowing for detailed analysis and further field studies. The disease re-emerged as a serious threat in the key salmon producing areas of Scotland, Ireland and Norway in 2003. In some outbreaks mortality levels can reach up to 60 per cent. The investment in trials, research and field based studies has en- abled the company to improve the vaccine again in recent years. One of the major benefits for UK producers today is that Dr McLoughlin’s considerable experience over years of vaccine development and supporting farm programmes is now allowing salmon operations in the UK to plan and manage preventative strategies for PD. ‘It has taken many years to reach the point where producers have a readily available vaccine. My objec- tive now is to provide the support and advice to ensure that it provides every possible opportunity to protect salmon from PD which is without doubt still a highly damaging disease,’ explains Dr McLoughlin.

Thanks to years of extensive product and field research, over 14 million salmon in Scotland have now been vaccinated with Norvax ® Compact PD since October 2008 – a highly valuable tool with which producers can protect their fish.

INTERVET SCHERING-PLOUGH ANIMAL HEALTH

duce the industry’s Code of Good Practice. Since 2004 he has worked with us at Intervet / Schering-Plough. The reality is that salmon production in the UK has evolved to become one of the most substantial food industries. Within this expansion the success of the key stakeholders and their sectors is largely due to the collaborative approach it has adopted. Sea lice management is typical of how, as an industry, we have responded to parasitic challenge. Over many years, by working together and with the authorities, viable strategies and options are available to salmon farmers. Providing SLICETM is part of meeting the challenge. However, as important is the hand-in-hand co-operation that brings together the strengths of the product and the farmers who use it. Nothing stays still for very long in the salmon industry so we believe that, by working together for mutual benefit, we provide in SLICE a product and a programme that both are robust in efficacy and adaptable in use.

Global Account Manager – Salmon

Having worked in the salmon industry for the past 30 years we can be forgiven for occasionally looking back to understand how much the industry has moved forward over time. Our global colleague Ralph Baillie is well known to the UK salmon industry through his years of working for Marine Harvest, both in independent production and the collaborative project to pro-

Chris Gould PhD Global Technical Manager - Salmonids I gained my PhD on Proliferative Kidney Disease in 1995; much of the time being spent in the very practical surroundings of trout farms in southern England. I then joined Aquaculture Vaccines Ltd, a company subsequently purchased by Schering- Plough. My career since then has closely mirrored the pace and scope of aquaculture both here in the UK and also overseas. Heading field trials on new vaccine development in the UK our team succeeded in bringing to market AquaVac ERM Oral vac- cine – the first successful oral vaccine for fish to be registered in Europe (full UK authorisation in 2001, EU license in 2006). Working closely with the industry we then established ‘Total Protection Strategies’ for prevention of ERM, which encompass immersion prime and oral booster vaccinations and which are now well accepted and adopted in the trout industry. As global technical manager for our salmonid business, I am now responsible for providing worldwide support to our range of vaccines and pharmaceuticals for both salmon and trout.

Oral vaccines are already playing an increasingly important role in many aquaculture sectors and there is no doubt in my mind that they will become even more key to profitable, sustainable aquaculture in the future.
