Tekla Frates (second from left) stands next to K McCarthy, project coordinator and veterans advocate for Liberty House in Manchester, a transitional house for homeless veterans. Tekla, a professional photographer from Boston decided to use her skills to start
welcomingarms.org, a non-profit group to help servicemen and women. Her first project, to create a vintage style pin-up calendar, is being sold with all proceeds going to Liberty House. Pin-up models Nicole Triolo (left) and Valerie Lake hold the Welcoming Arms banner. At far right, holding the calendar display is K’s granddaughter Alyssa Perkins.
“WELCOMING ARMS” PIN-UP CALENDAR HELPS SUPPORT HOMELESS VETERANS

The house at 75 West Baker
Street looks like any other in this quiet Manchester neighborhood. It’s the sign on the front door
that gives you a clue to what’s happening inside. “Through These Doors Pass
The Greatest People In The World. An American Veteran.” Liberty House, opened in 2004,
was the first transitional housing program for homeless veterans. “All homeless ex-servicemen
and women who were honorably discharged and who are com- mitted to changing their lives are welcome at Liberty House,”
explained K McCarthy who is the project coordinator and vet- erans advocate.
K also is a disabled vet. Liberty House has beds for ten
and the waiting list grows by the day. There have been about 50 transitional residents over the years.
