THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, July 15, 2010 RAMBLING from 50

from the pharmacy, with some “news” as to what my 20% was going to cost me. Predictably, in view of the circumstances, it was an amount several times greater than the $26.00 that would have been 20% of the $130.00 over the counter price of the test strips. All I can say is that it’s no wonder that Medi- care is going broke and that Wilford Brimley has job security. I declined the whole transaction and said that I wouldn’t be a party to $crewing the government. I went home and ate my lunch! Suffering fools is never

good for my blood pres- sure and I knew that it would become elevated as I explored the world of diabetic testing sup- plies and Medicare. Malzy (bless his heart) agreed to track down a solution to the test strip procurement problem. Many purveyors of diabetic testing sup- plies, including the one that Wilford Brimley has worked for, are not com- petitive and charge more than I think that our gov- ernment or I should pay. However, after a lot of time spent on the Internet, Malzy finally found Ameri- can Diabetes Wholesale, a company that sells dia- betic testing supplies for a somewhat reasonable price and also accepts Medicare. He emailed my doctor’s prescription as an attachment and then the

“fun” began. It seemed that the doctor’s prescrip- tion did not meet their requirements or those of Medicare. Poor Malzy and I both

went back and forth for over a week between my doctor’s office and Ameri- can Diabetes Wholesale, trying to get everyone on the same page. This morn- ing as I write, American Diabetes Wholesale called to indicate that they’d fi- nally received the required prescription and data from my doctor and that my

supplies would go out to- day. All this nonsense makes me wonder how some seniors who don’t have all their marbles or an advocate such as Malzy to help them, can survive. The shocking truth is, some don’t. I laugh when I hear the media refer to our “health care system”. The fact is there’s no system at all and never has been. When you see a familiar name in the obituaries, wonder to yourself if they perhaps left this world ear- lier than they should have,

due to their not having been able to secure their medications or other medi- cal needs. It is truly sad. I hope you enjoyed Ram-
