Association Launches 'Green Built Gulf Coast' Program
T
he GHBA is proud to announce the launch of its new green building program, Green Built Gulf Coast (GBGC). Under GBGC, the association is now an
adopting entity of the National Green Building StandardTM ICC 700-2008. The National Green Building StandardTM
is
flexible, allowing for regionally appropriate green building practices. This standard is the first American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-approved residential green building program in the nation.
GBGC is a voluntary green building program in which all GHBA members can participate. Whether you are a builder, a remodeler, a developer or an associate offering green products, there is a place for everyone. Unlike other green building programs, GBGC has provisions for both single- family and multi-family lot developments and projects.
GBGC requires an annual registration fee (which varies depending on the participant category), and offers discounts to those with Certified Green Professional (CGP) designations. All GBGC participants will be required to purchase a copy of the National Green Building StandardTM ICC 700-2008. Books can be purchased from GHBA for $40. There are also a wide range of sponsorship opportunities available, with various incentives for each.
GBGC has a separate agreement for each participant category: Builder, Remodeler, Developer, Verifier and Associate. Verifiers will use the National Green Building
StandardTM ICC 700-2008 book and the GHBA “Green Built
Gulf Coast Scoring Tool” to score and verify homes and lot developments. Builders will be able to choose which verifier inspection company will rate their projects. There are four performance levels that can be achieved: Bronze, Silver, Gold or Emerald. Many of you are already achieving Bronze status. In order to qualify for Bronze in the energy efficiency chapter of the standard, a home must be at least 15% better than the 2006 IECC (ENERGY STAR™ equivalent).
We are working hard to have a Green Built Gulf Coast Web site up and running sometime this month. Agreements, enrollment registration forms and the Scoring Tool will be interactively posted online.
GBGC has an anticipated official "go live" date of June 1. The timing allows us to take advantage of great media opportunities at GHBA's New Home & Remodeling Show, taking place June 12-13 at Reliant Stadium.
We expect a great amount of participation and success in our first year, and look forward to the future growth of the program. Be a part of the green movement and see how YOU can get involved today! To learn more, please attend the next Green Building Committee meeting, held the second Thursday of every month at 10 a.m. at the GHBA, or contact Meredith Spencer, deputy director of Government Affairs and staff liaison to the Green Building Committee, at
mspencer@ghba.org or (281) 970-8970 x142.
