ole models matter. I have always been confused
that we can point out the high-profile negative role models that our kids emulate, because of the allure of easy money, fame, jewelry and cars. Yet we ignore the thou- sands of hard working, principled minority men and women who
quietly put in countless hours of hard work every single day. Why are we so quick to acknowledge the impact of negative role models on our children and unwilling to believe that positive role models might just be the inspiration they need?
In this issue of Hispanic Engineer and Information Technology, we continue to pa- rade the countless positive role models in our community. One of our features, The Most Important Hispanics in Technology, Government and Business for 2010, show- cases some of the most accomplished professionals in America—who just happen to be Hispanic. But we aren’t just focused on those at the pinnacle of their careers. The hallmarks of success and the core values that are required can be found in profes- sionals at every stage. That is why we have also featured Forty Under Forty Hispan- ics. I was once told that the only place success comes before work is in the diction- ary. These bright, trail-blazing stars prove exactly that point. They are guaranteed a top spot tomorrow because they are doing all the hard work today.

Role models count because we need to be alarmed about the high dropout rate of Hispanic youth. In some of our cities, Hispanic male high-school dropout rates are pushing more than sixty percent. Without positive role models, who do they look to? If they never see an aerospace engineer, how can they possibly imagine shooting for the stars? Without interfacing with an automobile design, how can they dream about racing into the future?
We must be the positive role models our youth need to be the best. More impor- tantly, we must be the role models that prove to them that anything is possible for those who embrace hard work. America is now at a watershed. We are in danger of losing another generation of talent. The child who fails to complete high school and go on to further education or college is the adult that will potentially cost society by engaging in criminal and non productive activity. Role models matter. This issue proves just that.
