uch attention has been paid to the decline in American competitive- ness. As more and more countries produce increasing numbers of STEM talent, the United States is facing an unprecedented challenge to maintain its global lead. But educational achievement and work-

force readiness are only a part of the issue. The other half of the equation is the nation’s changing demographics.

Take India’s exponential growth. Their under-25 population is exploding at a rate faster than in the U.S. It is a dynamic workforce that will give the sub-continent an edge over the United States and other major economies. According to Business Week, The median age in India in 2000 was 24, compared to 30 in China, 38 in Europe and 41 in creaky old Japan. Without a doubt, America’s future competitiveness will come just as much from a new generation of young, educated workers as anything else.

According to the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, over the next fifteen years, the largest increase in the U.S. population is projected to be His- panic/Latino. The younger population, including those most likely to be in school, college, or professional training, is growing more racially diverse. And the Hispanic/ Latino workforce is projected to almost triple (from 6 percent to 17 percent). Indus-
