NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME TO START PLANNING

LA FAMILIA TECHNOLOGY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN 2010

La Familia Technology Awareness Events

La Familia Technology Awareness Cam- paign marks its 10th anniversary this October, so now’s the time to start mak- ing plans for your family and communi- ty to get involved in nationwide events and initiatives. Founded by CCG, and supported by founding sponsor IBM, the La Familia Technology Awareness Campaign has grown significantly over the years and continues to encourage the Hispanic community to incorporate technology into every aspect of their lives—career, education, family health, even shopping and leisure.

La Familia Technology Awareness has been fortunate to partner with a num- ber of community, faith, and school- based organizations, as well as govern- ment and corporate organizations, as we grow this program. Alamo Com- munity Colleges, Southside Community Education & Technology Center is a perfect example of one of the program’s long-standing partners. Located in San Antonio, Texas, the school participates annually by presenting, “Accessing Technology Resources In Your Own South Side Neighborhood.” Geared to- wards the entire family, this open house

seeks to expose the entire community to basic computer operations and tech- nology resources available to them.

Now is your chance to get involved by helping with an existing event or starting a new one in your area. The event can be for 10 people or 10,000. Get started by visiting the La Familia Technology Awareness Campaign web- site, www.lafamilianet.net, and read- ing about the many ways others have become involved. Or you can download materials that will help you plan an event in your community. If planning an event is not for you, then consider taking your family and community members to one of the many events being hosted by others.

The following two events are being held during the month of October:

The 2010 Women of Color VEX Robot- ics Championship will be held Saturday, October 30, in Texas, at the Dallas Sheraton Hotel. This high-energy, fast-paced competition is the perfect opportunity for families and groups to attend a free fun educational event that will engage and inspire parents and kids

alike. Attendees will also have the opportunity to talk with competitors about their robots and watch as they push their robots to complete the latest VEX challenge.

If you live on the east coast, then the inaugural “USA Science & Engineer- ing Festival” on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., might be the perfect field trip. This multi-cultural, multi- generational and multi-disciplinary two-week celebration of science will host hundreds of organizations from all over the United States. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with organizations invested in inspiring the next generation of scientists.

Additional information about the events listed above and many more can be found on the La Familia Technology Awareness Campaign website, www.la- familianet.net. More importantly, I invite your community to send me informa- tion about events in your area to add to the La Familia Technology Awareness Campaign calendar. Best wishes for a successful month of events, whether you plan your own or attend one.
