GABRIEL GUTIERREZ
Gabriel Gutierrez is currently a biomedical scientist with Science Applications Inter- national Corporation’s (SAIC) Civilian Health and Life Sciences Operation. Gutierrez acts as the liaison between SAIC, which serves as the prime contractor for the Malaria Vaccine Production and Support Services (MVPSS) for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ (NIAID) efforts to advance Malaria vaccine candidates into clinical trials, and the Malaria Vaccine Development Branch (MVDB) of NIAID. A major part of his duty as liaison to the MVDB is to manage several sub-contractors that are performing manufacture, stability, release, and analytical testing of their products.
Gutierrez completed his postdoctoral research at the Tufts-New England Medical Center. He joined SAIC and became involved in the malaria vaccine development program the company operates for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID).
MARIA CASTILLO
María Castillo, a mechanical technical professional at Halli- burton, solves issues detected by field engineers and technical services. In this capacity, she tests and analyzes tools for preventive maintenance and design modifications. In her short time at Halliburton, Castillo has
successfully managed overall quality assurance for U.S. and International sourcing, down hole tool designs and improve- ments, and resolved field-related issues that would otherwise result in lost time.
Castillo belongs to several organizations, such as the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, American Society of Mechani- cal Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers, among others.
MARIA E. HERRERA
Maria E. Herrera is a civil engineer with more than two years of experience in Hydrology and Hydraulics. During her twenty-five months working for the Center of Water Science and Engineering at
Science Applications Interna-
tional Corporation (SAIC), she has gained experience in water
modeling; including water distribution, waste-water collection and surface water. She also has been involved in the develop- ment, validation, testing and distribution of GIS tools/ applications for water modeling and assessment such as ICWater, SewerNet and PipelineNet as well with the improvement process for GeoSFM.
Herrera leads the task for literature review and survey for the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF), “Strategy, Guidance and Decision Support Systems for Deployment and Development of Upset Early Warning Sensor Systems for Wastewater Collection and Treatment Operations.” This year, she earned her Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.

MIGUEL ANTONIO FRANCO
Miguel Antonio Franco is the global operational excellence (OE) lead for Halliburton. He is respon- sible for deploying Lean Six Sigma to Field Operations. Franco trains, mentors, and supervises a team of six global OE champions and 30 district/country OE Champions. He works with numerous customers on
organizing joint Lean Six Sigma efforts. In his previous position--Production Specialist, EPIC—Franco led a Shop Floor Kaizen Event that reduced cycle time by 43% and decreased standard cost variance by $100,000 a year.
In 2002, Franco served as vice president of the Society of His- panic Professional Engineers. He earned his master of business administration degree from the University of Texas at Dallas. He has received the Halliburton MVP Award for improving the Electron Beam welding process.
