The severe weather experienced in December, January
and early February has had an impact on the Council’s
winter maintenance programme and budget. During
peak periods over 200 staff were deployed each day to
ensure prioritised road routes were kept open as well as
maintaining access to all schools, major health services
and key public buildings. It is estimated that additional
costs of £750,000 have been incurred for the purchase of
additional salt, grit and labour costs during this period.
Road temperatures fell to -14 degrees for lengthy
spells with subsequent damage to roads and footways
throughout Renfrewshire. The early assessment of costs
associated with repairing this current damage could amount to £1.5
million. Potholes and other serious footway or road repairs should be
reported through Renfrewshire Council’s Contact Centre to the Road’s
Maintenance Department or through me at the contact numbers below.
Fairtrade Fortnight is from 22nd Feb to 7th Mar. Renfrewshire recently
celebrated its 1st birthday as a Fairtrade zone. The Fairtrade movement
currently benefits millions of people in the world’s poorest countries.
This year’s theme is ‘The Big Swap’, encouraging people to swap their

to provide both our servicemen and women, and their families, with the
practical support they need.
Over the course of more than a century SSAFA has adapted and evolved
to meet the changing needs of our Armed Forces. Founded in 1885 to
support the troops and families of the second expeditionary force to
Egypt, the charity’s work is just as relevant today as it was then.
As the number of fatalities and serious injuries sustained in Afghanistan
continues to rise, SSAFA’s family support groups are playing a vital role in
helping relatives come to terms with loss and life-changing injuries. Our
two Norton Homes allow injured troops to spend time with their loved
ones away from the hospital environment, giving them the opportunity
to do normal family things such as eat a meal together or simply watch
a film.
In addition each year in the UK our network of trained volunteers
assists 50,000 people - Second World War, Malayan, Korean, Suez, Aden,
Falklands, Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, National Servicemen,
members of the Territorial Army, the Merchant Navy and their families.
In a typical year Caseworkers and other trained Volunteers; of your local
Branch, we have no paid staff, almonise and deliver between £150,000 and
