Abbey Houston Nursery celebrates
Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is not only for the adults!
Children from Abbey Houston nursery were keen to join in with Valentine’s
Day celebrations and take the opportunity to tell their families how much
they loved them.
Special messages for Mums, Dads, sisters, brothers and even Grandparents
were written on large heart shaped cards and given out this week. The
children also spent time talking about celebrations in other parts of the
world and will be exploring the year of the Tiger as part of the Chinese
New Year which also takes places on 14th February this year.

Houston Primary School
Staff, pupils and parents have been giving generously to charity in recent
months. After our Christmas events, pupils donated £200 to “new Hope
for Children” following a very informative talk by Mrs Dorothy Pearson,
grandmother of one of our pupils. McMillan Nurses also received a cheque from
our pupils for £200 and a Staff collection of £188 in memory of a mother of
one of our pupils, who sadly died recently. The usual mountain of shoe boxes
generously donated to School and Nursery were collected and distributed.
P6 have raised a four figure sum for UNICEF following a sponsored run. The
final total will be revealed at P6 Assembly and in our next report. The Pupil
Council organised a Hats for Haiti day and staff and pupils came to school
wearing an assortment of headgear! There was great amusement. The grand
total of £500 is being sent to Mary’s Meals to support the rebuilding of schools
which were destroyed.
In January, we assembled to remember and celebrate our National Bard by
organising a special Scottish afternoon. It included our customary “Address
to the Haggis” poetry, recitations and special music for the occasion. During
the preceding weeks pupils had the opportunity to learn and practice their
lines with their classmates, finally choosing the entries for the programme
on the day. The pupils accumulating the highest number of points were:
Gemma Elmes, Ross Laird, Laura Maskrey, Alexandra Finnie, Katie Harrison
and Iona Cochran. Thanks to Mrs M Ballantyne for presenting the Shields and
Certificates. Well done everyone. P7 visited Alloway and a concert party of
talented pupils visited St Andrew’s Senior Citizen’s Club and entertained and
enthralled audience.
Our School grounds are about to have a facelift thanks to the sterling work of
Mrs Diana Brooker who led a project with pupils which has secured funding
of almost £10,000 from Awards for All. School Council fund raising efforts are
also being used to fund the project and we are looking forward to the results,
following the Easter break. Mrs McPherson and the Eco Committee have also
been very busy organising a competition to design creative school grounds
and the very best ideas are taken on board to turn the plans into reality.
P3 pupils have designed and created a most impressive Egyptian Museum
which has been visited by parents and guests this term. P6 enjoyed a Bridges
Tour then designed and built their own bridges and tested their strength.
These pupils also enjoyed coaching sessions provided by Strathgryffe Tennis
Club.
Many extra curricular clubs including the Junior Choir, Senior Choir, Handbells,
Football, Netball, Basketball, Badminton, P4 Sports Club, Hip Hop Dance
Club, Country Dancing and Computing have been running this term thanks to
our dedicated staff and community workers.
The Valentine discos were a great success and enjoyed by many pupils. Thanks
to the School Council and Mrs Craig’s Disco.
Our School have very many events and activities to look forward to before
School closes on Thursday 1st April for the Easter holiday and re opens again
for pupils on Tuesday 20th April.
