Iggy PoP
Preliminaires
Iggy Pop has entered a parallel universe for his new work entitled
Preliminaires. The “King of Punk,” Pop turns 180 degrees and delves into
the French-inspired jazzy and reflective world of Michel Houellebecq
and his book The Possibility of an Island. Iggy Pop just wanted to take
a break from what he terms, “idiot thugs with guitars.” The avant-
garde results of this trek into an eclectic set of tunes could
be deciphered into a term paper on what it all means. This
feeling of exploration dives deep into a world of New
Orleans jazz, funk and the blues. As Iggy Pop puts it on
one song, “You can convince the world that you’re some
kind of superstar, when an asshole is what you are.” Iggy Pop still hasn’t
lost his bite. Available 06/02/09.
Teena MarIe
Congo Square
It’s hard to believe that it has been 30 years since Teena
Marie came on the scene. Her pure sense of rhythm and
blues and her blue-eyed soul created musical fireworks
with pure hits such as “Lover Girl” and “Square Biz.” On
her newest release, she has produced and written all 16
tracks. Marie was really inspired for this new set of songs,
“Each song I was coming up with began to sound like the
style of some favorite artist of mine from the past.” Her first
single called “Can’t Last a Day,” recorded with Faith Evans, is
a sultry slow groove and a much welcomed back nod to her
distinctive voice. Available 06/09/09.
The SoundS
Crossing the Rubicon
If you miss the days when Blondie and Missing Persons
ruled the music charts, The Sounds create fresh new
wave sparks with their latest recording called Crossing the
Rubicon. This Swedish group’s lead singer Maja Ivarsson has
all the vocal talents of a Deborah Harry or Dale Bozzio and
then some. Her sound is tough and the synthesized spin of
the band is tight with a definite rock edge. Known for their
exuberant live performances, The Sounds are currently
touring with No Doubt. Available now.
