Barbados St Nicholas Abbey Despite the name, there’s no religious link to this Barbadian great house. Instead, it is thought that one of the
former owners of this Jacobean house took a fancy to the name. Dating from 1658, the house passed through several families before being bought by Bajan architect Larry Warren in 2006 and restored. Today, it is renowned for producing its own rum since the 1700s. Visitors can wander through the ground floor but the upstairs is out of

bounds. There is a cinema room showing a black-and-white film taken by the Cave family in 1935, when they owned the house. As one of Barbados’s main tourist
