Mystery Shopper in Skegness

This week, our Mystery Shopper visited two agencies in Skegness, Lincolnshire, to request a bird-watching holiday in Tobago in May with a budget of £4,000. They then chose two companies from the Google.co.uk results for “bird-watching holidays in Tobago”

This week’s contenders:

Thomson 74 Lumley Rd

First impressions: The store looked bright and inviting. A smiling, smartly dressed consultant greeted me immediately but started the consultation without offering me a seat. They had a professional and enthusiastic manner. 8/10

Sales process: I was asked all the necessary questions and they researched the Asa Wright Nature Centre and Lodge on nearby Trinidad. The consultant followed up with suggestions to suit my budget and dates. 10/15

Product match: The agent showed me some hotel options in a Virgin Holidays brochure including the three-star Turtle Beach, which just met my budget on an all-inclusive basis. I was prompted to book, offered a business card and given a brochure to take away. 12/15

Making the sale: They warned me the price and availability could change and stressed that the holiday sounded fantastic. They told me it was a good price for an all-inclusive holiday and I could book tours locally. They had covered all aspects of my enquiry. 9/10

TTGhas teamed up with React Surveys to simulate a realistic booking process each week – that means a mystery shopper looking for the best deal from agents and operators on the high street, online, on TV or in newspapers. The Mystery Shopper research is carried out on behalf of TTGby React Surveys, and no further details or information can be disclosed. Researchers take into consideration first impression, sales process, product and budget match and extras offered before giving an unbiased opinion of which channel/company they would have booked with on that occasion. We do not claim that the winner is the best in an area or specialist sector, as we may report on competing travel firms in the future. Please note that the aim of Mystery Shopper is not to criticise individual agents or companies, but to promote good sales technique for the benefit of all in the travel trade.
