Phuket has new hotels aplenty too – most

Akyra Manor Hotel on Chiang Mai’s happening Nimmanhaemin Road. Further south, Koh Samui welcomed the 148-room Manathia Hotel to Lamai beach; stylish small-scale property The Scent Hotel on Bang Rak beach; and Panacea, a rock star-ready collection of six ultra-lux residences complete with private cinema, 300-bottle wine cellar, 65-metre infinity pool, gym, spa, nursery and nightclub.

notably the apartment-style Cassia, and the fantastical pods and treehouses of Keemala, due to open in January – while older brands are revamping and relaunching to keep up with the competition. The Regent Cape Panwa has become the Amatara Resort and Wellness, with a new focus on Thai therapies and Turkish hammam treatments; the Royal Yacht Club, Phuket’s oldest five-star hotel, will reemerge as the Nai Harn in the new year following a

multimillion-pound refurbishment; and the On-On Guest House in Phuket Old Town, made famous as the grotty hostel where Leonardo DiCaprio’s character bedded down in The Beach, has been revamped into a fashionable abode. And it’s been all go in the capital too;

lifestyle brand Hotel Indigo cut the rope on 192 exceptionally pretty rooms on Wireless Road early in 2015, and the Four Seasons transformed almost overnight into the Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel and Spa. Landing at the end of 2015 is the Avani

Riverside Bangkok, with 249 rooms, a swish rooftop bar and super location on the banks of the Chao Phraya River opposite Asiatique night market and just 15 minutes by shuttle boat to the heart of Bangkok. Meanwhile, 2016 will have us drooling over

the 222-room Park Hyatt Bangkok. Housed in the top 24 floors of coiling mirrored building above the swanky Central Embassy Mall with an emphasis on high design, fine dining and sterling service, it promises to be one of the most talked about new hotels of the year. With much to look forward to and the baht at a six-year low, now is as good a time as any to go to Thailand.
