51 middle east It’s a tale of two halves in the region, with new developments in the UAE, Oman and Qatar knowing no bounds, while Egypt’s tourism is left reeling from the downing of the Metrojet aircraft near Sharm el Sheikh. But a glimmer of future tourism hope is also starting to peer out from Iran, as the country prepares for a new wave of visitors 52 Make a note of all the latest hotel openings and air news ready for 2016 56 Why one agent has a soft spot for the Middle East
Mark Hillsdon Ever since spending a week in Torremolinos in 1977, Mark’s taken every opportunity he can to indulge his wanderlust. These days, he writes for The Telegraph, National Geographic Traveller UK and CountryFile. Travel highlight of the year? Chicago certainly delivered.
The architecture’s stunning, there’s some inspired public art and a clutch of superb galleries and museums. Add in buzzing nightlife, some beautiful parks and exciting new hotels and it’s easy to lose a week there. (See p34 for some of Mark’s Chicago picks.) Where will everyone want to go next year? I’ve got a soft spot for eastern Europe – the history, the countryside, the concrete – so maybe more people will start to appreciate it as I do. Slovenia is breathtaking, from its mountains and lakes, to historic cities like Ljubljana. For something grittier, Bucharest is a must.
Emily Wright As a writer for publications including GQ, Tatler and The Sunday Times, Emily combines her commercial property expertise with lifestyle and travel. She loves sub-Saharan Africa but is particularly at home in the US where she is always on the hunt for the ultimate pit BBQ.
Travel highlight of the year? Exploring the eerie underground Basilica Cistern in Istanbul; it was just like being on a James Bond film set – stone Medusa heads and all. Either that or sitting in a canary yellow Mustang convertible in Islamorada eating a slice of key lime pie smothered in chocolate and frozen onto a stick. (See p32 for her Miami vices.) Where will everyone want to go next year? It feels like Seoul is about to burst on to everyone’s radar as people rush to get there before the masses descend for the 2018 Winter Olympics; plus there’s a new Four Seasons to check out.
