CHECK-IN
W
elcome to the November issue of Business Traveller, the time of the year when all of our flights seem to be taking off and landing in darkness, and the daylight
hours are spent abroad or somewhere high in the sky, jetting between appointments. I’ve recently been lucky enough to fly on a number of new-
generation aircraft – the Boeing Dreamliners and the A350s – and much is made of the new LED lighting on board, which subtly alters the colour of the cabin to lessen the effects of jet lag. Along with larger windows allowing more natural light in (at appropriate times) and a design that heightens the ceiling (or at least provides a less claustrophobic feeling when you first step on board), these design tweaks, along with greater pressurisation and humidity and less noise, are all designed to make flying more pleasurable and to recapture some of the excitement of the Golden Era of travel. Considering these improvements alongside greater flight safety,
improved ability to avoid turbulence, upgraded airports, new super hubs and even free wifi, you’d think we were the luckiest travelling generation there has ever been. Still, survey after survey details our complaints and dissatisfaction with the services we receive. It’s beyond the scope of an
introductory letter to give my theory on why this is, but if you focus on the positives, the negatives of travel are rarely all that bad. And I speak as someone who has frequently had to improvise on work clothing when my bags have been mislaid, has missed connections leaving me in countries I never wanted to visit (and lacked the visa for even if I did), has had just about every kind of liquid
spilled on me in-flight, and even had a nappy dropped on my head while I slept. With a little perspective, both the good and the bad are just anecdotes. To find out which travel companies have been particularly good at making your travelling lives easier this year, turn to the results of our reader-voted awards on page 32.
