WATCH SPECIAL
Hidden depths Diving watches
ROBUST IT MAY BE – as a diving watch, it has to be – but Tudor’s new Pelagos is light as a feather, with a case made of high-tech titanium. Of no less ingenuity is the brand’s first-ever in-house movement, a highly precise engine powering a watch that is built for underwater action.
The unusual shape of the hands and hour markers, designed for ultra legibility, reference historic Tudor designs – a bit of old thrown in with the searingly modern.

engineering complex at Silverstone, it’s extraordinary to think that British watch firm Bremont was a fledgling start-up, founded by two Henley-based brothers, a mere decade ago. Although commonly associated with flying – founders Giles and Nick English are both pilots, and many of its watches are aviation themed – Bremont now seems set to conquer the waves, as official timing partner of both the America’s Cup and its most recent winning team, Larry Ellison’s Oracle Team USA. “We grew up sailing, and I trained as a naval architect, so we got to know sailors who had been part of the Cup,” Giles explains. This eventually led to an introduction to Ellison himself. “Larry’s very into his watches, and a keen pilot, so we had a strong connection with him.” Bremont has created four watches initially for the competition – two smart limited editions, the AC I and AC 2, and two tough watches, the Oracle I and Oracle II. These are designed for enduring the fastest and toughest sailing race of them all. All four are available now.
