n a letter to his stepdaughter, Hortense, in 1807, Napoleon wrote, “To live is to suffer, and a human being who is worthy of honor must

always struggle for mastery of self.” Josh Blanchard had suffered enough on the lanes by the time he broke through to win his first PBA title after four years of trying. The root of that suffering resided in the latter part of Napoleon’s advice.

ONE MAN’S THRILL, ANOTHER’S AGONY: The thrilling rolloff be- tween Josh Blanchard and Tom Smallwood in the semifinal match of the 2013 PBA Scorpion Championship begins at the 9:35 mark. They match each other strike-for-strike for four frames. Blanchard then steps up in the fifth after Smallwood assembles a five-bagger, and the suffering he would endure on the lanes be- fore realizing his dream of becoming a PBA champion continued.
