Ball Review

THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST

RADICAL: RACK ATTACK PEARL 48 Hook 16.5 Length 16.5 Breakpoint Shape

Manufacturer’s Intent: “The Rack Attack Cherry Pearl features a pearlized version of the low-friction coverstock and will provide significantly more length [than the Rack Attack Solid reviewed on pg. 24] with a similar controllable breakpoint, making it ideal for medium to light oil and especially good for bowlers with higher rev rates,” says Mo Pinel. “The addition of these balls gives Radical a complete line of ball motions encompassing every bowler on every lane condition.”

Core: The Rack Attack Pearl has the same 2.542 RG, .024 Diff, 3-inch flare symmetric core as the Rack Attack Solid.

Coverstock: The cherry red pearl reactive cover is sanded with 500 SiaAir, polished with Royal Compound and topped off with Royal Shine to give it

a shiny finish. We measured an RA value of 2.14 and effective surface grit of 5190.

Overview: Those who love to see a ball get down the lane with no problem and then make a left turn should look into this one. On the Stone Street pattern, we had to play more in the track area and more direct through the front part of the lanes. We were crossing 10 at the arrows to around seven or eight at 45-46 feet (a foot longer than the Solid ver- sion’s breakpoint), according to the CATS. This ball was pretty impressive on the lighter house pattern, as we played the third arrow out to eight-board at the 45-foot mark. We created some hold left and quite a bit of area to the right, with the ball saving its energy nicely for the backend. On the USBC Open patterns, we played more of a direct outside angle. It seemed to be a little too long and over-reacted on

the fresh. We were crossing five at the arrows and four at the 46- to 47-foot breakpoint. This is definite- ly a ball for the breakdown when the lanes start to burn up and open up. It was cleaner and longer than the Grease Monkey Whack (March 2015). It’s about two boards less hook than the Whack and about four boards less than the Rack Attack Solid. League bowlers on five-man teams could have a great look for the evening with the 1-2 combo of the solid and pearlized Rack Attacks. Bowlers with slower speeds on hooking lanes will also want this ball in their bag and, for the price, you can’t go wrong.
