THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST

BRUNSWICK: SOUL MATE 50 Hook 17 Length 16.5 Breakpoint Shape

Manufacturer’s Intent: “The Soul Mate pearl has a new coverstock formulation along with a new core design, providing a skid/flip ball motion on medium to dry oil lane conditions,” says Brunswick’s Bill Orlikowski.

Core: The Soul Mate is powered by the same symmetric core as its counterpart, the solid Soul (reviewed above). The RG is 2.54, the differential is .041, and we saw 3 to 4 inches of flare with our layouts.

Coverstock: The orange and fire pearl CPTv2 Flip cover is sanded with 500 SiaAir, polished with Royal Compound and topped off with Royal Shine. We measured a RA value of 1.55 and effective surface grit of 5730.

Overview: If you want a ball that is clean with a strong back-end reaction, the Soul Mate fits. The Mate definitely complements the Soul, as it provides more length and more back-end reaction. It is cleaner and a little stronger than the Gold Rhino Pro (March 2015). On the Stone Street pattern, we had to play farther right than with the Soul because of the pattern’s length, but we were still able to create a good angle. On our light house pattern, we had a great look with the length of this ball allowing us to play a little more right than with the Soul, with a strong back-end reaction to make the pins dance. We were around 15 or 16 at the arrows out to 10-board at the 47-foot breakpoint, according to the CATS. On the USBC Open patterns, the Soul Mate was probably too clean and angular on the fresh, but could come into play during

“WE THINK THIS BALL IS THE CLEANEST IN THE RINGER AND SOUL LINE. BOWLERS NEEDING HELP TO GET THE BALL THROUGH THE FRONTS BUT WANTING A GOOD KICK IN THE BACK WILL WANT IT IN THEIR BAGS.”

the singles block. It would be a good number three ball in your bag for when the lanes start to hook and open up. But we did find a shot playing 10 at the arrows out to seven at the 46-foot breakpoint. We think this ball is the cleanest in the Ringer and Soul line. Bowlers needing help to get the ball through the fronts but wanting a good kick in the back will want it in their bags.
