THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST

HAMMER: ARSON HIGH FLARE 49 Hook 17 Length 17 Breakpoint Shape

Manufacturer’s Intent: “The original Arson had a medium differential,” says Ebonite International Group Marketing Director for Bowling Ball Development, Rich Hanson. “We lowered the Diff when we created the Low Flare for more control. For the High Flare, we’ve raised the Diff to create a much stronger ball in Hammer’s Mid-Performance category. The polished pearl finish will create a strong skid/flip ball motion best suited for medium oil patterns.”

Core: The High Flare uses the Modified Arson 2 symmetric core with an RG of 2.48 and a high dif- ferential of .054. We saw around 4 inches of flare.

Coverstock: The red pearl and yellow pearl Max- Hook Pearl cover is sanded with 500, then 2000 grit Abralon and polished with Powerhouse Factory

Finish Polish. It has a RA value of 2.16 and smooth effective surface grit of 6165.

Overview: I am sure a lot of bowlers have been asking for a high-flare offering to complement two low-flare Arsons (February 2013 and January 2015). This ball does not disappoint. The Arson High Flare really opens up the pattern a lot, especially on Stone Street and the light house pattern. We played 14 at the arrows out to seven-board at the 46-foot mark on Stone Street. The High Flare was two to three boards right with our feet than the Low Flare solid, but provided a lot stronger back- end reaction. On the light house pattern, we were able to get in a little deeper and not lose the ener- gy. We were 17 at the arrows out to seven-board at the 46-foot mark, according to our CATS, with a strong motion off the breakpoint and strong con-

tinuation through the pin deck for good carry. On the USBC Open patterns, we were playing 13 or 14 at the arrows out to seven at the 45-foot mark. This ball was aggressive on the fresh and could be better as a great number two ball after the pattern settles in. The Arson High Flare gives low rev play- ers a lot on the backend for a great price, while still providing a clean motion through the fronts. Whereas the low flares give you a smooth motion and a predictable back-end reaction, the High Flare will open up the lane with a strong back-end.
