Responsible tourism

More than perhaps anywhere else in the world, there’s a critical need for all visitors to the polar regions to treat the environment with utmost respect.

Our polar voyage partners lead the way in operating ships and shore excursions in full compliance with the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) guidelines, as well as the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO).

On board, you will fi nd a strong emphasis placed on environmental guidelines and wider discussions of the issues facing these fragile environments and their wildlife.

One example is the ‘Save the Albatross Campaign’, which has provided vital funds to help conserve this magnifi cent species through research. By travelling with us, you will be contributing to this and other vital projects to aid polar conservation.

Polar experience

On all of our polar voyages, the aim is to maximise time spent off the ship, seeing amazing landscapes and wildlife up-close. Because of this, our ships have excellent Zodiac operations, which will make it as easy and quick as possible to get on and off the ship.

Many of our trips will offer a choice of walks on the landings and a few have extra hiking options. Kayaking and camping are also available on some of our voyages and can be organised directly with the ship operator.

“Sailing through the Arctic made me feel like I was on the edge of the world; nobody else in sight and icebergs for miles to come. I have never experienced anything so magical as spotting my fi rst polar bear; seeing her walking across the ice with her two cubs just took my breath away.”

“I came back from Antarctica wondering what else could compare. There was so much to the trip; seeing crabeater seals basking on pristine ice fl oes, penguins in their hundreds, the oily-looking sea against the glacial backdrop – it was just magical! My fondest memory of all was being inches away from a curious humpback whale that swam between our Zodiacs, fl uking his tail as if playing to the crowd. It was such a peaceful sight, something that will stay with me forever.”

“I had high expectations of Antarctica, particularly as it was my honeymoon, and they were smashed! Never would I have thought that I’d be lucky enough to witness eight orcas using a penguin as a tool to train their young – a highlight, albeit slightly cruel, that will remain embedded in my memory for the rest of my life.”

“As we journeyed to the bottom of the globe, we experienced our fi rst 360 degree horizon. Humpback and minke whales accompanied us for a while and albatrosses swooped at the stern. First, came tabular icebergs, then penguins porpoising out of the waves in the distance. Before long, we caught our fi rst glimpse of the White Continent. As for our fi rst steps on Antarctica; one word - breathtaking!”
