This is a scenic voyage from Scotland along the rugged Norwegian coast to the heart of polar bear land; Spitsbergen. On this epic journey, you will visit the remote Shetland Islands, before discovering Norway’s fjords, medieval villages and glaciers. Exploratory trips by Zodiac will take you deep into nature. Spitsbergen’s wildlife - polar bears, Arctic foxes and a myriad of birdlife – awaits you at the culmination of your expedition.
Voyage itinerary
Day 1 Board your expedition ship in the suburb of Leith, Edinburgh, and embark on your voyage to the Arctic.
Day 2 Visit the mystical historic sites of the Orkney Islands, set amid dramatic coastal scenery. The Orkneys are also a haven for bird-watching.
Day 3 Continue north to the isolated Shetland Islands. Under Norse rule until 1469, the islands’ ancient archaeology and spectacular coastlines are an intriguing mix of Scotland and Scandinavia.
Days 4 to 8 Crossing into the Arctic Circle, you explore Norway’s most beautiful fjords, glaciers and mountain scenery. Your captain will ensure the best landings along the shore, so you can make the most of your time in this rugged environment.
Day 9 The Lofoten archipelago is an enchanting area of picturesque villages by the sea. After landing on the island of Aa, you sail into Trollfjord, home to mythical trolls.
Day 10 Visit the Arctic Cathedral at Tromso. Its unique architecture is evocative of snow and icebergs.
Day 11 Explore mist-shrouded Bear Island, populated by thousands of fulmars, kittiwakes, guillemots and gulls.
Days 12 to 14 During your time in Svalbard, search for walrus, seals, reindeer and Arctic foxes, as well as polar bears. If you’re lucky, you may see a mother with cubs. Shore walks and Zodiac adventures bring you close to icebergs and glaciers.
Day 15 Arrive in Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen’s capital, early in the morning and in time to explore this desolate town.
