Travel from the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’ towards the home of the mighty Polar bear.
This expedition takes us from Iceland towards Spitsbergen in Svalbard, Norway. Crossing the Barents Sea, we may encounter a variety of large-bodied marine mammals. On our way, we will make a stop at one of the most isolated islands in the world - Jan Mayen. Enjoy your journey through the glacial wilderness and keep your eyes peeled for walrus, whales and of course - the mighty polar bear!
Voyage itinerary
Day 1 Embark M/S Fram in Reykjavik, where your journey begins. Day 2 Visit the historical town of Isafjordur, the largest town in the Westfjords. Day 3 Head north across open sea towards the Norwegian Arctic. Day 4 Jan Mayen is one of the most isolated islands in the world. Dutch whalers operated out of here in the 16th century. Today, it houses a Norwegian weather station with a few inhabitants year round. Although landings are extremely rare, we will attempt to set foot on this remote outpost. Day 5 Through our on-board lectures, we prepare ourselves for Spitsbergen – the next highlight of our voyage. Day 6 Ny-Alesund has been the starting point of several historical attempts to reach the North Pole. Here you can visit the small visitors’ centre and the northernmost post offi ce in the world. Day 7 Depending on ice conditions, we will attempt to cross the 80th parallel, something that would have been inconceivable for a passenger ship just decades ago. Day 8 Another full day to enjoy this glacial wilderness. If we are lucky, we will spot some of the larger species who use these waters as hunting grounds. Day 9 This morning we will wake up sailing into Isfjorden - the largest fjord system in Spitsbergen. We will also sail past Alkhornet, one of the most prominent bird cliffs in the area and home to Brunnich Guillemots and Kittiwakes. Day 10 You will arrive in Lonyearbyen in the early morning, where your magnifi cent journey ends.
