Finally, our White Label Solution is the easiest way for our partners to enter the burgeoning igaming market with a White Label Solution.

This simple, minimal cost solution is built around a revenue share model. With the WLS all licensing requirements are taken care of and it allows you to have a sport, virtual and casino offering without the cost and time commitments of running the business.

What specifically characterises the South African sports-betting market? What are the opportuni- ties and difficulties you face in supplying your services and products to customers?

There are plenty of tech challenges in building for Africa. The two main ones being connectivity and the types of devices that are being used.

Connectivity in Africa is much slower than in other regions so things such as page and image size matter a lot. As for devices, Africa has mostly skipped the desktop generation and the majority of users are using the internet only on a mobile phone, frequently a hand-me-down, which means that mobile must be a priority focus for African markets.

All told there are hundreds of manufacturers of thousands of models of mobile phones in use. Each device holds its own challenges and simply there are too many to cater for every single one. Feature phones are the most challenging as the

clientele that use them still expect the same level of service on that device as they do on a desktop, so it’s all about how you cater for their needs in a smart way.

To respond to such a broad market, in Africa and beyond, we make use of various detection plat- forms to determine a device, as well as its capa- bilities, and then respond to it. For example, is it a touch device? If so, the buttons and links are made slightly bigger as we all have fingers bigger than a stylus so it’s hard to press tiny links. If it is cursor-oriented, like BlackBerry devices, then the page is laid out to make it easier to click on and navigate using that tool, while with button-driven phones it is essential not to duplicate links, i.e. an image and text should be one link, not two, as this causes extra clicks to get down a page.

What other countries in Africa do you serve and are they at a comparable level to the South African sports-betting market?

We serve Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. The major difference is the lack of horse racing, which is massive in South Africa and far more important compared to other African markets.

Across Africa it is all about soccer – especially the English Premier League which many Africans almost consider to be their own.

Africa is also still very reliant on brick and mortar stores as moving money into and out of on online system can be challenging, especially with the number of unbanked people. There is still a long way to go across the continent in terms of con- sumer education.

Many people instinctively trust the option of a bricks and mortar store over an online-only brand but this is changing, fuelled by the convenience of mobile, and the future looks incredibly exciting.

Playabets BetTech supplies the sports betting and horse racing platform to Playabets, the newly-launched online and mobile offering from the van der Vyver family, a traditional, offline bookmaker for the last 65 years.
