It’s been six years since Apple’s AppStore launched and changed the way we interact with our phones. A whole host of new business models were born dur- ing this period while existing businesses have had to adapt to manage the chal- lenges and opportunities presented. Publishing continues to evolve to remain relevant within an increasingly App-orientated market, which has touched gaming just as it has impacted everywhere else.
Today there are 1,252,777 Apps available on the App Store and as many as 60,000 Apps are added every month. Over half a million new Apps are expected to join the Store over the next 12 months. Staying relevant during this process has proved a major challenge, with more than 21 per cent of Apps that have entered the App Store no longer in existence - that’s around 350,000 dead Apps.
Books and games share the ignominious top spots for the highest percentage of dead Apps, 27 per cent and 21 per cent respectively. The term Zombie App has also been applied to Apps that have fallen off the Apple lists and into a dead space where few visitors dare to travel. In fact, almost 80 per cent of all Apps are considered to be Zombie Apps.
Having launched our second App into the marketplace for Android, Blackberry and iOS last month - the G3Newswire App - our complimentary App to our daily news website has been downloaded by 1,650 users in just six weeks, Our first G3i App was launched in 2010 and continues to expand with over 3,800 subscribers having downloaded the App.
THERE ARE 1,252,777 APPS ON THE APP STORE AND AS MANY AS 60,000 APPS ARE ADDED EVERY MONTH.

Surprisingly, and despite launching two new websites and two Apps in the space of three years, in addition to a tri-weekly emailer, we are currently printing and distributing more physical magazines than ever. We have shifted from a magazine publisher to a content distribution com- pany with more contact points with readers, enabling them to keep up to date wherever and whenever they are in the world. Thank you for helping us stave off the Zombie apocalypse!
