ABTA LAUNCHES A MANIFESTO FOR


JOBS AND GROWTH IN TOURISM, SETTING OUT ITS DEMANDS OF POLITICIANS AHEAD OF NEXT YEAR’S

Backers of the Abta 2015 general election manifesto say it will help the travel industry secure the recognition it deserves as a vital contributor to the UK economy.


The six-page document was launched to industry executives and about 60 MPs and peers at the Houses of Parliament last week. The Manifesto for Jobs and


Growth in Tourism sets out the trade association’s key demands of the political parties ahead of next year’s general election. Mark Tanzer, Abta chief executive, said: “The build-up

to the next election is under way and it is going to be a frantic time for politics. But among the ‘who is in or who is out’, there is an important policy debate to be had.” Tanzer said the next


government should recognise that travel could play an important role in consolidating what, to date, has been a fragile consumer-led recovery. “Travel and tourism should be one of the pillars for that vision, both in terms of the skills profile of our industry and its job creation potential,” he said.

Abta spelt out five key demands on the front of its manifesto. These called on the government to:  Act urgently to address the issue of airport capacity;


Invest in infrastructure; Further reform and reduce Air Passenger Duty;


Adopt a cohesive approach to tourism policy embracing the inbound, outbound and domestic sectors; and


Ensure the completion of consumer protection reforms. Speaking to Travel Weekly at
