Carrier defiant after second horrific event
T
he sympathy of all in the industry goes out this week to family and friends of the 298 passengers killed onboard a Malaysia Airlines flight downed over eastern Ukraine. And that sympathy will extend to colleagues at Malaysia Airlines suffering a second terrible tragedy in four months. Either one of these events – the disappearance of flight MH370 in March and the apparent missile strike on Amsterdam flight MH17 last Thursday – would be almost too much to bear. The occurrence of the two is without precedent and Malaysia Airlines deserves all our support as it deals with the consequences and the grief of so many whose lives have been hit. The implications for the wider industry are unclear.
Heightened political tension is certain and sanctions likely on Russia. Revised air routeings may be extended – and not just to avoid Ukraine, in light of recent developments in Syria and Iraq. There are questions to be asked of governments and of
air traffic control arrangements – for which governments are ultimately responsible. There are questions about the assessment of risk in situations such as that in eastern Ukraine. Unfortunately, these are issues the industry can do nothing to address. What those in the sector can do is to see this tragedy for what it is and reassure customers and colleagues that it is as every bit as extraordinary as it is terrible. As Malaysia Airlines’ UK area manager Weng Chi Lee tells
Travel Weekly (page 10): “Our focus is the family and friends.” But he adds: “We have been flying 42 years. We fly 50,000 people a day, 360 departures a day. I am confident that we will see this through.”
