MAKING THE CANAL TURN BY JANE ARCHER “Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Infinity was packed as the Bridge of the Americas loomed out of the mist. So what that it was 06.00 and raining; no-one wanted to miss the start of our voyage through the Panama Canal. The bridge is one of two spanning the canal, a 48-mile channel cut through Panama 100 years ago (August this year marks 100 years since it opened) to avoid the long and dangerous sea route around Cape Horn. Lectures had set the scene but no amount of talking could replace the excitement of sailing through. We entered from the Pacific, climbed 85 feet above sea level by means of three locks, sailed the Gaillard Cut, into the Gatun Lake, then climbed back down to the Atlantic at the three Gatun Locks at Colón. The crossing took about eight hours and I was out on deck for most of them, as were many other passengers. All of us commented it was incredible that this engineering feat was achieved so many years ago.”
