MALDIVES The Passport to Paradise

From blissful beach retreats to cool kids’ clubs and unique underwater adventures, the Maldives has more to keep you entertained than you may think, says Lauren Jarvis

M

uch has changed since the first resort was developed in the Maldives in 1972. The remote Indian Ocean archipelago

welcomed its millionth visitor last year, and over 100 of the nation’s 1,190 islands now host some of the best luxury hotels in the world. With its white-sand beaches, warm turquoise seas and stunning sunsets, the Maldives is undoubtedly one of the planet’s most romantic destinations, with many opting to tie the knot or spend their honeymoon at one of the myriad exclusive island properties on offer. “We’re definitely seeing a trend in couples

moving towards luxury resorts like the new Maalifushi by COMO, which offer good value with added extras like free nights and upgrades,” says Lee Ainsworth, Long Haul Product Coordinator for Hays Travel. “As a result, our average price point per person has risen by £600 in the last six months alone.” But as well as appealing to couples, the Maldives is becoming increasingly family- friendly, with many of the resorts boasting

excellent kids’ clubs and activities. And, while many flock to the islands for a relaxing escape or spa break, the broad range of water sports, excellent surfing and unique underwater environment are also major draws for travellers

“While the Maldives are an excellent choice for families, many of the islands have specific adult-only sections that are perfect for couples or friends looking for a quiet break”

in search of a more active adventure. “The Maldives offers some of the world’s best diving and snorkelling, with an incredible diversity of marine life including turtles, dolphins and whale sharks,” says Hays Travel’s Ainsworth. “Our customers are becoming increasingly

aware of the islands’ nature and conservation efforts, which makes them want to experience the Maldives themselves.” Live-aboard cruises are a great way to

explore the islands and reefs, but 40% of visitors choose to stay at one of the country’s all-inclusive resorts, which have the benefit of providing clients with a good idea of the total cost of their trip before they travel. One resort offering top-end all-inclusive holidays is the Atmosphere Kanifushi where its Platinum Plus option covers everything from a la carte dining and all beverages to sports and excursions, free wi-fi and suncream. Sam Clark, Founder and Director of Experience

Travel, says that while many clients opt for this classic Maldives ‘one island, one- resort’ holiday, more adventurous travellers are now combining two, or even three. “The cost of multi-island itineraries can add

up, but travelling between the resorts by boat or seaplane is an exciting holiday option, plus each resort will offer a different experience,” he said.
