Well, this time the column is the last word on not just our July/ August issue but also on more than 24 years of Selling Long Haul. I’ll admit to a little sentimentality here, and a certain 'poignancy’

riting this column is, as every month, the final act in wrapping up the editorial content of Selling Long Haul. But why bother to mention it, I hear you ask?

But any such melancholic reflections are more than offset by the excitement we all here feel about the imminent arrival of Selling Travel, which will be coming your way next month. We are not calling it a ‘new launch’, or even a ‘re-launch’, because our intention is to move seamlessly into a new era and deliver you the same in-depth coverage of destinations and agent-focused stories as we always have. But we will also be adding more coverage of mid- and short-haul options. Flicking through our first-ever issue of Selling Long Haul, in March 1990, we promised a magazine that would be ‘colourful, exciting, informative and authoritative’. We think we have been true to our word over the years, and that will still be our mantra with Selling Travel. Readers will notice some design tweaks and some new features, but more about that next month. Until then, enjoy our swansong issue, which includes destination


pieces on New Zealand, Seychelles, Maldives and Oman, along with a profile of great bird-watching spots around the world and a look at a highly profitable sector for agents: Luxury African Lodges. We also carry news from three trade shows: in Australia, Thailand and Fiji. We were the only UK trade magazine to be present at all three shows, proving that, as we say goodbye to Selling Long Haul and get ready to welcome Selling Travel, we are still travelling further to bring you more.


WHERE WE'VE BEEN


ALAN ORBELL Spent a long weekend in Guernsey, cycling the west coast, eating crab sandwiches and day- tripping to Sark.


STEVE HARTRIDGE Got to see the US Golf Open at Pinehurst with North Carolina Tourism and also toured Charlotte and Ashville.


JO AUSTIN Joined a press trip to Kenya designed to show that the country is open for business. She spotted plenty of wildlife enroute.


ANDY HOSKINS Hopped across to Los Angeles for a business travel summit and some city and beach-side sight- seeing in between.
