Day in the life In control Multiple store owner James Playle on life as a CeX franchisee

James Playle “P

rior to owning a CeX franchise, I worked as a European equity sales trader. The hours were long and I was sat in front of

a screen all day. Part of the appeal of owning a CeX franchise was the lack of routine – every day is different. I opened my first store in Dartford in November 2012 and my second store, in Chelmsford, opened in October last year, so I’m spending more time working at the Chelmsford store at the moment. Fortunately, the Dartford business is now in a place where I don’t have to be there every day; I can take a step back. CeX’s model is one that allows you to macro- manage the business. The stores get extremely busy so I like to get in early, before the opening time, to sort things out, but I sometimes spend a bit of time at home in the mornings doing admin.

role; I’m on my feet most of the day managing, etc. Recruiting new staff is also a big part of my job. For the last vacancy we advertised, there were hundreds of applications to consider, but I have support from CeX for this side of things.

“ Part of the appeal of owning a CeX franchise was the lack of routine – every day is different”

In my previous role, I was communicating with stockbrokers and investors, now I’m in a business helping people buy and sell second-hand electronic and entertainment goods – the difference is drastic but I love dealing with the general public on a daily basis. Initially, I had to work seven days a week in order to get my Dartford business up

and running but, thanks to the efficient systems in place, I soon had a good work- life balance. With my second store, I had it up and running the way I wanted by the end of week one, compared with two months for my first store! Now, I work flexible hours and can manage my schedule around family time. I can get up at 3am or 9am! I have three daughters, one of whom works in my Chelmsford store, so I drop her off and pick her up.

My youngest daughter is nine years old and the flexibility of my CeX business means that I can do the school run if I want.

Choosing to invest in this business has vastly improved my lifestyle – I have freedom with CeX.” n
