hoosing the right franchise business can prove difficult. You might ask yourself: “Is this the right sector for me? Can I see myself developing this business?”

The questions can seem endless. Two that you must ask yourself, however, are: “Can I work to a structured business model?” and “Do I believe the model actually works?” Market-leading home care franchisor,

Caremark, has an outstanding proven business model developed to enable the right people to build a business in a rewarding sector. As the demand for care services continues to grow, so too does the need for top-quality care providers. The time is perfect for people with drive, ambition and determination and the foresight to follow a proven business model to take up a Caremark franchise. Last year, a husband-and-wife team

from Northern Ireland carried out their research and decided that investing in a Caremark franchise was for them. Richard and Emily Magrath signed their franchise agreement and completed their two- week training, before launching their care business in April 2013. Their North Down, Ards and Belfast franchise was the first Caremark office in Northern Ireland – an exciting time for all involved. One year on, they are a testament to how sticking to a proven system reaps rewards and they doubled their projected figures for the

period. Here, Richard shares his Caremark experience.

Why the care sector?

Emily left her job and, with no guaranteed income, we decided to have a look at going it alone and setting up a family business. Once we had decided on the franchise route, the obvious aim was to try to find a sector that would be recession-proof.

“As demand continues to grow, the time is perfect for people with drive, ambition and determination – and the foresight to follow a proven business model – to take up a Caremark franchise”

After doing some research into care franchises and talking to a number of companies, there was really no doubt in both our minds that the only choice we would be happy with was Caremark, given the emphasis on delivering a high- quality service.

What training and ongoing support have Caremark provided? Emily attended an intensive two-week residential course held at Caremark’s head office. Having no experience of the care sector, the task of making the business operational was daunting. The course, however, gave Emily the confidence and knowledge to implement the Caremark system successfully. Our regional support manager provides us with great ongoing support.

What have been the challenges so far and what are you enjoying the most? We have been trading for 12 months now and are well ahead of our projected target. We put this down to the good market research we conducted at an early stage – understanding your market is key in any business. We are enjoying the challenge of building a business in a sector previously unknown to us. We are also enjoying implementing the Caremark model and seeing the rewards of following the system, backed by our great support team. n
