Purely power

Specialising in generator manufacture, Stephill will promote its latest product developments at the Show to hirers, who represent its principal market.

Much has been reported about the resurgence of British manufacturing, particularly with regard to specialist businesses developing products for specific markets. One such supplier that is proud to attach the Union flag to all its machines is Stephill Generators, which claims to be the largest UK manufacturer of portable diesel and generating sets, currently producing approximately 15,000 units each year.

Founded in Orpington in1985, Stephill moved three years later to its present facility in Wellingborough, which covers 40,000ft2

and

employs 45 staff. It exports to 30 countries overseas, and in the UK the hire industry represents its largest market.

Road-tow models have AL-KO chassis designed to comply with relevant EU legislation.

“One of Stephill’s strengths is that we

specialise in

manufacturing generator sets, giving us great expertise in this area, as well as an understanding of the market and its requirements,” Sales Manager Dick Beechey told EHN. “We also commit to holding substantial stocks so that we can meet hirers’ needs quickly, and we can supply most products and parts on a next-day basis for orders placed before 3pm. We are able to customise machines easily if required, such as by fitting Chalwyn valves and spark arrestors on generators that will be used in potentially explosive locations, as we are in control of the manufacturing process. We also use components sourced from premium suppliers, such as Honda, Kubota, Lombardini, Perkins, Yanmar, Mecc Alte and AL-KO.”

The Stephill line-up includes petrol generators from 2.7 to 10kVA, silent diesel sets also from 2.7 to 10kVA (3,000rpm), and skid- mounted and mobile super-silent machines ranging from 6 to 67kVA in 1,500rpm and 3,000rpm. Also available are generators designed for use in welfare units from 6 to 20kVA, as well as standby AMF (automatic mains failure) sets. Welder generators of 200A, AC or DC, are offered, fitted with Honda petrol engines, and the company also offers SLT6000D machines that incorporate a lighting tower with a 1000W metal halide lamp on a 5.5m four-section mast. can be detached quickly, enabling the unit to be hired as a standalone generator if required.

Amongst popular products supplied to the hire industry are generators in the Hire Max range of petrol machines, ranging from 2.7 to 6.5kVA. These incorporate fully welded, one-piece wrap-around protective frames, and a four-socket control box is fitted as standard to models from 3.4kVA upwards.

Stephill is in the process of enhancing its super-silent SSD diesel range of 12-70kVA machines, which will be augmented by a new 100kVA set this year. “The line-up is being re-branded as the Hi-Rent range, and we will be able to give more information to visitors to our stand at the Executive Hire Show,” said Dick Beechey. “The original machines have proved very popular in the construction market, and we believe they also appeal to the events industry, which is a niche that more hirers are now targeting. The units will be fitted with stylish silver canopies that have a smooth finish, and the control boxes will be placed at the end of the generators to facilitate safe operation in certain situations, such as when using a towable model by the roadside, and the standard specification includes Deep Sea controllers, three-way fuel valves, forklift pockets and a central lifting point.”

Machines of 30kVA and above are EU Tier 3a emissions compliant, helping users to meet environmental obligations. In addition, where possible, Stephill sources items from local suppliers, including control boxes from a Wellingborough company and insulation materials from a Melton Mowbray firm, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of the company, which is also exploring the installation of roof-mounted solar panels at its premises. With green issues being reflected more and more in organisations’ procurement policies, such characteristics are of increasing importance to hirers and, together with Stephill’s latest product developments, there will be plenty to interest visitors on the company’s stand.
