EHN follows the ten products that will form the Innovation Trail at the Show.

Maintaining the initiative introduced last year, the 2014 Show will include the Innovation Trail, highlighting new products that meet hirers’ needs in areas such as emissions, economy and sustainability. Exhibitors were asked to nominate products launched since last year’s Show for consideration, and a panel including several passionate hirers selected ten finalists from 43 eligible entries. Each exhibitor’s stand will be highlighted by a large, unmissable floor tile.

Turning left after entering the hall, visitors will soon reach Kubota on Stand A35, whose KX080-4 excavator is a finalist. The manufacturer has drawn on both its excavator and engine making experience to develop an eco-friendly machine delivering better performance than its predecessor. For more information, see the Exhibitor Profile article on page 51.

Proceeding clockwise you will reach Angry Bear at Stand B5, manufacturer of the Combo 300, which combines the functions of a crusher, a shredder and a hydraulic power pack. It can process items found commonly in construction, including plasterboard, rock, slates, plastic, glass and cardboard, reducing landfill disposal costs and enabling some materials to be re-used. Moving on to the top left corner of the hall, the next supplier on the Innovation Trail is Himoinsa (Stand D10), which makes the Power Cube compact generator. We describe it further in our Exhibitor Profile on page 39.

Travelling further will take you to Leica Geosystems (Stand D54). Its Disto D810 touch is described as the first laser distance meter with a touch screen plus the ability to take pictures and calculate measurements on the display. Very close by is Altrad Belle (Stand D55), manufacturer of the PCEL400E electric plate compactor, targeted at those seeking to reduce their carbon footprint. Available in 110V or 240V, it incorporates an 11kN vibrator unit for faster compaction and productivity. Continuing from the top right corner, visitors will see an Innovation Trail floor tile at HTC Floor Systems (Stand C175), maker of the Greyline

Superprep tools and Greyline Pre-Separator unit. The latter attaches between the grinder and dust extractor to collect larger debris removed by the aggressive action of tools when working on coatings, glues and other residues. This extends filter life and increases dust collection capacity.

In the lower right corner of the hall, on Stand A105, MLS (Mechanical Line Solutions) will display its Drop Down Tank Water sensor that enables service engineers to detect free water in diesel tanks. Battery-powered, the unit’s weighted probe is lowered into the tank and an alarm sounds if water is detected. Heading towards the centre of the hall, visitors will reach the next Innovation Trail finalist at Morris Site Machinery (Stand B50), in the form of the SMC Solar-2 lighting tower, which we described more fully in our November/December issue. Incorporating solar panels, special batteries and advanced LED lamps, the UK-manufactured machine emits no emissions or noise, and uses no fuel.

Two finalists will be in the Atrium exhibition space. Armorgard Security Products’ (Stand X17) folding board trolley can carry up to 60% more plasterboard and other sheet materials than similar units, and has no detachable parts. The central A-frame is designed so that weight leans towards the centre for stability, and its quick-fold capability means it occupies less space in hirers’ yards and vehicles.

On Stand X50, Aristospray will show the MP016 from its Strata range for applying plaster and render. Claimed to be the first 110V unit of its kind in the UK, it is designed to work with most materials with a maximum grain size of 3mm. It has an integral cleaning system, is easily transportable, and Aristospray sees strong hire potential for it, given the need to increase buildings’ thermal efficiency.

This is only a brief summary of each finalist, so to find out more, follow the Trail! The judges will make a final assessment on the opening day, and it is planned to announce the overall winner during the Show.
