Katy continues: “If the company you are looking to train with hasmultiple trainers around the country, you will need to find out if they train in exactly the same way. Many technicians have completely different styles of working and teaching so you will need to research the background of the trainer that they are going to use for your course. This will enable you to see if theirmain skillsetmatches what you are looking to achieve.”

“Look for testimonials on training companies websites. Most up-to-date companies should now be providing video testimonials online for any potential future technicians to look at.Themore up-to-date their website is, will give you an idea of how up-to-date the training will be.”

Katy also recommends that you train with someone who currently runs a business as a Micropigmentation specialist. “Ideally you want to spend yourmoney learning from someone who is running their own permanentmake-up business, who is dealing with real clients day in day out. It doesn'tmatter if they work for a big company, as long as they deal with and satisfy their own permanentmake-up clients on a daily basis.

“I would suggest that you even dig a little deeper and find out howmuch does your trainer charge for their treatments. The price your trainer charges can strongly co-relates to the price that your clients will be willing to pay you after you have trained with them. For example, if your trainer can only charge between £200 and £300 per treatment and they have been doing it years, then what does thatmean you can charge once you have been trained by them?”

Consider what your training package includes – will you need to purchase your kit separately and will you receive post- training support when setting up your business? You should also think about the format of the training; does the course have any pre-requisites regarding beauty qualifications? Is there any pre-study required? Howmany days training do you receive and how far apart are these spaced? Do you practice on livemodels, and how are you assessed?

“Classes need to be kept as small as possible, as the learning is very intense and you will need a lot of individual attention throughout the days you train,” advises Katy. “It goes without saying, that if you can get one-on-one training for your very first course, then this hugely outweighs any group training youmay receive.”
