intimatewaxing
With the idea of intimatewaxing becoming
less taboo, more clients are heading to the salon to request this type of service.
FromBrazilians through to Hollywoods and beyond, intimate waxing is becomingmuchmore mainstream, with everyone from realityTV stars through toA-list celebrities revealing what goes on ‘down there’, so with pubic topiary seemingly here to stay, are you making themost of your waxing services?
“As opinion changes on the subject of intimate waxing, making it less ‘taboo’, demand increases within the
salon. The clients now coming through for Brazilians, Hollywoods and Playboys are not limited to younger women, asmore andmore salons are findingmature ladies requesting these treatments also,” says Jess Clayton, in- house therapist andmarketing assistant for Hive of Beauty.
A recent survey by Remington seems to back this up, stating that out of 3,000 women interviewed, it was the over 55s that came out on top when it came to removing unwanted hair, with one in three admitting they were always prepared.
The survey also revealed that British women on average spend £8,000 on hair removal during their lifetime, whether it be on shaving, waxing ormore permanent hair removal solutions.
Yet, despite the popularity of intimate waxing, it’s surprising how few people actually understand the differences between the types of wax services available. “Intimate waxing can be confusing, there are somany services – Brazilian, Hollywood, LasVegas, California etc. it becomes a bit
perplexing. The client also gets confused and sometimes books in for a bikini wax and before you know it she has held her briefs up so high, and asked you to wax so low fromthe top that you have almost achieved a Brazilian wax!” remarks salon owner and trainer,Marie-Louise Coster.
“[If this happens] you must be firm with your services, if a client wants more than a standard bikini she must be informed that what she is asking for is a Brazilian, for example, and therefore they must pay for this service,”Marie- Louise adds.
To help address this problem prior to the treatment commencing, ensure you carry out a full consultation to determine the style of wax your client wants and explain any contra-indications that may occur once the wax has been completed. If you offer a variety of different waxing styles, a simple treatment menu card may help to clarify your services and will allow your clients to choose a style that is most appropriate for them.
“Talk your client through the treatment, discuss the client record data in a full consultation and advise of what to expect and what not to expect to avoid disappointment as there are still clients who think it’s a one off miracle where you get waxed and the hair will never grow again. If you can be honest and inform the client of every aspect, they’ll know exactly what to expect and will become a loyal client,” comments Britta Krueger from BeautyTrix.
But, it’s not just the ever-changing waxing styles that discerning therapists need to keep up with, as Britta explains: “The new wax generation includes polymer waxes which are heated at a much lower temperature to avoid burning and ease the setting. They stay flexible as long as they are on the skin giving the therapist lots of time to remove the wax without going hard or brittle.
“Special anti-inflammatory ingredients [also] make the experience more comfortable and with the aid of the pre-wax oil as a barrier between skin and wax, you only pull the hair and not the skin which used to be the case with waxing before.”
essential education
The complexity of intimate waxingmeans that it is paramount for both your reputation as a salon / therapist and for your clients’ health and safety that you seek out additional training with courses that specialise in this particular area before you begin offering this treatment.
“I think that the seriousness of intimate waxing is often over looked, if not ignored, by the therapist (and the salon owner) with thismentality that because you can wax you can carry out intimate
waxing. This is completely untrue, the area you are dealing with is extremely delicate and not using the correct procedure can result in damage, pain, bruising and serious discomfort to the client – ultimately this could result in you being sued or damage to your business reputation,” warnsMarie-Louise.
Fortunately, there are a number of training courses available throughout the UK to help you to fully understand the intricacies involved with intimate waxing.
“If you are going to offer intimate waxing as a service within your salon you have to invest in specific training – this is invaluable. When choosing your training provider ensure that the course covers not just the practical aspects of the treatment but also the under-pinning knowledge and professional standards and procedures.A good training provider will insist that you are already qualified in waxing and will be accredited by an awarding body,” remarks Marie-Louise.
“As we all know the products alone don’t make a good treatment, the technique is key especially when you are dealing with delicate areas. Ensure to go for fully accredited training and preferably one-to- one so that you can make the most of your time with the trainer to pick up all the little bits of information you can,” Britta adds.
