Bath Race and a Golf Day. “We also ensure that staff are kept appraised of the company’s progress with a six monthly commercial update that highlights the successes the business has had and challenges it faces,” added Gilbert.
According to Goodman the management style within the business is unorthodox. Due to the business being fluid and constantly changing, staff are encouraged to think for themselves and to challenge one another regardless of their position in the company. “We never stand still long enough to allow for stagnation, and as such our teams are dynamic, passionate and dedicated,” added Goodman.
In early 2010, having sought advice from a key channel partner, Focus Group made a strategic decision to build on what was almost exclusively a telecoms business by adding IT and network services. Later that year it launched the Network
Services division, working with the likes of Exponential- e and TalkTalk Business to provide EFM, leased lines and MPLS circuits. “In November 2010 we approached an existing reseller whose core product was IT support,” explained Gilbert. “By April 2011 we had successfully acquired the company and created Focus IT Services. These have proven to be hugely successful and with a continued rise in the deployment of IP- PBX and hosted VoIP solutions, both of these divisions play key strategic roles in their future.”
Never content to stand still, Gilbert and Goodman have gone a step further and launched Focus Integration, a specialist mobility and data centre solutions provider that helps clients plan, design, build, manage and maintain their IT infrastructures. The move sees Focus working with vendors such as Cisco, Meraki and VMWare. Gilbert commented: “Channel partner relationships are
a key part of any reseller’s success. What we look for in our channel partners are businesses that understand where we are try get to and what we’re trying to achieve. We choose partners who embrace this and provide both commercial and strategic support.”
With the ever decreasing wholesale costs of WAN services and the constant improvements in hosted PBX products, you might expect the team at Focus Group to promote these as the hottest growth opportunities in the industry, but that’s absolutely not the case at the moment. “In fact, Focus believes that the majority of customers are not ready, nor are they prepared to take the leap of faith into what they perceive to be the new technology,” commented Gilbert. “Focus has embraced the changes and broadened its portfolio in preparation for those customers who are ready, but for those who are not we are equally well placed to accommodate them.”
