UKFast’s hunt for key buys
CLOUD and colocation firm UKFast is on the acquisition trail having grown organically from a two-man team in 1999 to a £20m turnover firm with even bigger ambitions.
According to CEO Lawrence Jones now is the time to take the company’s growth to a new level and turning strategy into action he has established an M&A team with a remit to iden- tify neat fit acquisitions. “We have looked at other hosting providers but have not managed to find one where the mix is just right,” said Jones. “The time is right to put a team together dedicated to find- ing a company with the perfect mix for UKFast. “Our M&A team will be ded-
icated to the task of getting to know the management teams of organisations and delving into businesses so we know exactly what we are buying.” Jones is in talks with a num- ber of people with backgrounds in private equity and corporate finance locally and nationally to build the new team. CHESS CEO Dave Pollock aims to raise £150k in October for The Christie and Prostate Cancer UK charities by per- forming some Funny Business at the Comedy Store on Deansgate Locks with a group of other high profile Manchester busi- ness people.
Those taking part will link up with a professional comedi- an who will mentor and prepare them for the event. Pollock will be coached by John Cooper in preparation for his four minute solo performance. Pollock said: “I’ve done a lot of scary stuff for charity before but this is right up there. I’m used to public speaking but hav- ing to make people laugh with my own material is another mat- ter altogether. But it’s nothing compared to the bravery cancer patients show every day.”

COMMS company boss Ken Cheek could be the most recognised telecoms engineer in Britain after being chosen as a poster boy for a new advertising campaign. The 54-year-old from Essex, whose business Five Star Comms specialises in telecoms, data cabling, CCTV and door entry, was picked to be one of just four ‘faces’ of a new ad campaign for the Volkswagen Transporter. Cheek and three other small businesses star in the campaign with the slogan ‘We never forget the most important name on our vans. Yours’, and will share the equivalent of £2.5m worth of free advertising as a result. Cheek commented: “This only hit home at the photo shoot. It took so long to do it, I realised it was serious. I’m really hoping that people will see the adverts and give me a chance to quote.”
