MAITLAND TOWER HO


Model railroading is a really personal thing, as it should be, and Frank Lea says his usual modeling subjects are “anything that went into Conrail.” He grew up on the New Haven line to Willimantic, which was cut back to Manchester, Connecticut, in the 1970’s but still served a lumber and brick yard and a grain elevator (inbound feed). The line had an inter- esting mix of cars. Penn Central 2027 comes out of this era. It is an HO scale Atlas Train- man RS-32 and a work in progress for Frank. New horns, antenna on the roof, lift rings, and brake and m.u. hoses are among the added details. The wire grabs and cut levers are from the Bowser Alco diesel detail set. He says “I went through a lot of No. 80 drill bits.” The 2027 has factory paint and lettering. This model represents the spirit of the prototype modeling movement well in that it shows both its roots and how it is played out today. Most prototype modeling activity involves working with off-the-shelf models and parts.


May 30 and June 1 marked the twelfth running of the Collinsville RPM Meet. I remember the first one I attended, the second one. (I was some- where else the preceding year.) Mike Rose called me and said, “Bill, you have to come. This thing is great.” I could see Mike smiling as he said this with that big grin that he has. Mike was right about the meet, of course. It has been great for a dozen years now, and, as far as I recall, I


haven’t missed many of them. The pre- sentations covered “Northeastern top- ics” and wider geography, plus 3-D printing (rapid prototyping is getting finer and there are companies that work well for what we would want to do), laser cutting, DCC and onboard battery power, among others. On Sun- day there were open houses for lay- outs, too, a bonus for the drive home. As usual, I encourage you to see for yourself at an “RPM” near you. Bring a


Also in the best RPM tradition, Kaylee Zheng’s GP40 came in the box for a Rail Power Products GP40M. Their shells made a decent starting point for a trip to the hobby shop and handfuls of Cannon and everyone else’s parts. This HO model has an Athearn cab, Cannon nose, cab base and blower housing, new fuel tank, Smokey Valley dynamic brakes and a Cannon rear hood end. The air conditioner is Details West and Detail Asso- ciates provided the antenna. There is more to come, but the body is close to being ready for paint. Conrail did not have any GP40M’s, but the NS had standard cab GP40’s, so what better reason is there for doing the model? Kaylee usually models Conrail subjects.


The Maitland Tower kit builds into a model of the tower's initial configuration and can be modified to represent a number of other Erie west end towers. Maitland also broke up the block between Glen Echo and Cold Springs on the Dayton Branch and was used by the DT&I to issue trains orders. This served to extend the tower life more than anything else and remained in service well into the Conrail years. Crossing Shanty not included
