The roof sections came next. I made

the 12″ thick tower roof by laminating two .040″ sheets, which were easier to cut, with 4″×6″ spacers. The 4″×6″ pieces were also used on the inside bot- tom of the roof to help align the remov- able roof. The bottom of the roof was painted concrete. The Z-shaped tower floor was cut to model the staircase. The floor was painted Reefer Gray and the bottoms SP Lettering gray. The interior walls were cut from Pikestuff Concrete Walls. The entire interior layout of the tower is totally an estimate on my part based on the loca- tion of the walls and doors. I debated between painting the interior walls SP Lettering Gray or a Pea Green, which was popular in commercial buildings in the 1950’s, finally settling on the light gray.

North elevation

I made the 48″ wide steps using Evergreen’s staircase frame, 2″×12″ treads and 1″×10″ risers. The landing was cut from .020″ scrap. They were pre-painted Reefer Gray.

Doors, windows and trim South elevation

I used 6″×8″ strips painted Sand to cap the walls. They were scribed at four foot intervals to represent sand- stone. The sandstone window sills were formed with 2″×6″ and 1″×4″ pieces. The window and door steel plate was made from 1″×8″ strips and painted black. The solid doors were cut from .030″ sheet. The doors with windows were formed by laminating two pieces cut from .010″ sheet to the clear piece between. The doors were painted Polly Scale Gravel Gray and framed with 1″×2″ strips. The door knobs are brass pin heads. Three inch wide strips of chrome Bare-Metal foil sprayed with Dullcote to get an aluminum look were added to frame the three lower windows. 1″×2″ strips painted flat aluminum formed the outer frame. The 3′-3″ square concrete chimney

cap was cut from .060″ scrap and the upper edges beveled. A piece of K&S ¹₈″ square brass was cut 18″ long for the flue, and painted Polly Scale Harvest Gold.

Interior and exterior details On the ground floor the only other detail I added was a water fountain formed from styrene 40″ high and painted metallic gray with a stainless steel top. There was an athletic field down the road from the tower. The tow- er operators would always let us come in for a drink of water after games. Even though the tower would face
