railroad photographers, was an early provider of what we might today call a stock photo library of railroad imagery. The International Engine Picture Club was formed in 1931, and for decades it connected like-minded enthusiasts through the pages of magazines such as Railroad–fanning the flames of in- terest

in railroad photography and photo collecting.

While the photos on the pages of books by authors such as Beebe, or in the pages of Railroad magazine great- ly influenced generations of enthusiast photographers, there were many oth- ers who took pictures of the railroad for other reasons entirely. A profession- al photographer hired to document the scene of an accident, or a railroad em- ployee paid to photograph line-side structures for valuation purposes, or a tourist taking a snapshot of a trolley– all of these are examples of the myriad types of photographs that were taken without the influence or constraint of the railfan aesthetic of the time. Because of its self-proclaimed focus on vernacular photographs, my expecta- tion was that this book would be quite different than the numerous other books of railroad photography lining my bookshelves. On the contrary, what struck me most is how similar the pho- tography of this book is to so many oth- er railroad books on my shelves. Indeed, all of the historical railroad books I have consist mostly of a mix of roster shots, commissioned documentary-style portraits, average action shots, and snapshots that happen to show notable features of the railroad or surrounding landscape. Books with a focus on the fine art qualities of railroad photogra- phy are a mix of images depicting loco-

motives, rolling stock, employees, and the landscape with which the railroad interacts. Even today’s ever-growing digital rail photo databases include photographs that span the entire gamut from documentary roster shot to ab- stract artistic interpretation. While all taken for different reasons, each of these types of photo did, and still does, communicate something about the rail- road to the viewer. What I take away from this book is not just how vernacular railroad photo- graphs of the past have influenced the style of those making railroad photo- graphs today, but that we are all con- stantly cultivating our own collection of vernacular railroad photographs. Whether

our collection is physical

prints in a shoebox, digital images on a hard drive, or images in our head, all of us who make or view railroad images are continually immersed in everyday, ordinary, vernacular photographs. “The patina of time will transform any artifact into an object of venera- tion.” Brouws presents this quote from Sarah Greenough’s book, The Art of the American Snapshot, to preface the in- troduction. Today we look back on pho- tographs like those presented in Some Vernacular Railroad Photographs as moments in time long-passed, viewed through lenses shaped by our own ex- periences and interests in particular regions or railroads or locomotive builders. In time, the photographs we take today, no matter how ordinary they may seem in the moment, will ac- quire a similar historic patina. Hope- fully there will still be collectors out there to cultivate, collect, and cherish those photos, as Brouws and Burton do in this book.–NICHOLAS D’AMATO
