of the solenoid windings.

Our sample is equipped with a Digi- trax DT4 accessory decoder. An optional NCE decoder is also available at an ex- tra cost for those who have NCE DCC systems. We put our car on the track and did an out of the box test run using the default address of 03. The system performed as expected, with the cou- plers opening or closing with each press- ing of the F3 and F4 buttons. We next attempted to set the long address to match the long address of one of our locomotives. Here we en- countered a problem getting the de- coder to accept the new address in the Program on the Main process. The manufacturer indicated that this has occurred on very rare occasions and in- dicated that they are able to substitute an NCE decoder to resolve this partic- ular issue. We took a second approach by put- ting it on a Digitrax system to program the long address. While this resolved the problem, the disadvantage is that the decoder will remain assigned to the address of a single locomotive. Finally, we tried successfully to program the long address with the NCE ProCab in

the Program Track mode. Thus it is proven that the car can be matched to any locomotive long address using the NCE PowerCab. As indicated above, the uncoupling operation met the expectations, allow- ing us to couple and uncouple without problems. The uncoupling car was posi- tioned behind the locomotive and used to classify a yard full of cars. We used the undertrack uncoupling magnets to separate one or more cars destined for a specific track, then dropped them on spot using the automatic uncoupling device. We were thus able to spot the cars wherever needed without having to have an uncoupling ramp at the spe- cific positions.

Using the DCC uncoupling car through in a new dimension to switch- ing, i.e. the ability to spot a car any- where on the layout without having an uncoupling ramp near at hand. I have to admit that it also stirred the imagi- nation as to where the concept of re- mote uncoupling can go. The possibili- ty to uncouple any car anywhere on the layout has intrigued this reviewer. I personally look forward to where this could go.—KEN BREHER
