ders are built from cast resin stiles and drop grab-irons. Building the side and end ladders is time consuming and re- quires patience. Each ladder is built by assembling two cast-resin styles and pre-formed wire drop grab irons. A way to do this is to first drill depressions on the style for the grabs. Then glue the style to the car side such that the holes are 18 inches from, and horizontally aligned with, the holes on the edge of the ends. Then, drill the holes deeper and install the drop grabs. A mandrel is included to assist in grab irons to correct length.

An interesting feature in this kit is the technique used for attaching the metal parts. The metal etchings in the kit for the brake step, lateral walk sup- ports and running board supports have small holes to enable them to be “pinned” securely in place. After the metal parts are initially glued in place, a No. 79 bit can be used to drill through the small holes in the etchings into the carbody. Next, small lengths of .008″ diameter wire are inserted through the holes in the etchings into the carbody and glued to pin the metal parts securely in place. The excess wire is clipped off leaving a touch of wire to simulate a bolt holding the part, an el- egant solution for attaching delicate metal parts.
The resin parts included for the let- ter boards for the road name and road number are both twelve inches wide, but from examining prototype photos the letter board for the number should be only eight inches wide to display the six-inch tall numerals. To complete the review model, the fol- lowing additional parts were installed: Kadee No. 158 scale head metal whisker couplers and InterMountain semi-scale 33″ wheel sets for the includ- ed truck frames by Tahoe Model Works. The completed model was painted with Polly Scale Zinc Chromate Primer. This is the first available HO kit that represents the Wabash 15000-se- ries stock car. www.dccuncoupling.com. While this product has been avail- able since about 2007, the DCC Uncou- pling Boxcars have not previously been reviewed in RMC. Viewed as an inter- esting concept, we were provided a sample by System Five-O for our eval- uation. The product arrives fully as- sembled and ready for the layout. Our sample uses the carbody of an Ac- curail 40 foot boxcar lettered for the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad. While very little change is evident from the outside, removal of the body shell re- veals the heart of the product. Under the shell of the product is a printed cir- cuit board mounted to the floor with a double faced adhesive strip. The circuit board provides mounting for a Digitrax DCC accessory decoder and two sole- noids.
It also provides attachment points for the power inputs from the trucks. All four wheels in the truck allow electrical pickup for the unit. Two guides are provided on each end to guide the reinforced thread along its path to the knuckle of the Kadee coupler. Operation of the remotely controlled couplers is accomplished using the keypad on a DCC control unit. The cou- pler on one end of the car is operated by pressing the F3 button to open the coupler and then pressing the F3 but- ton a second time to close the coupler. The coupler on the other end of the car is operated in a like manner by press- ing the F4 button. Each pressing of the F3 or F4 button energizes or de-ener- gizes the solenoid which, in turn, pulls on the reinforced thread connected to the face of the coupler on its respective end, thus opening or closing the cou- pler. Since the solenoid remains ener- gized until the next depression of the appropriate function button, it is rec- ommended that the solenoid be de-en- ergized by pushing the function button immediately after uncoupling to re- duce power consumption and heating
