Building a flexible module A: End Cap

one end of the board drill six ³₈″ holes in the center of the board at 5″ intervals. The other end of the board will be used to attach a hinge. Before assembling the frame, cut a 20° or so angle in one end of both slide bars and both clamp bars so that these parts will move as shown in Fig. 4 (be- low) when attached to the end caps. One end of both slide bars and both

clamp bars are attached to the frame with a 4″ strap hinge.

These pieces (above) form the backbone of the flexible module. Strap hinges attach one end cap to the two clamp bars and another end cap to the two slide bars. Bolts are used to attach the clamp bars to the slide bars. (See the photos bottomand right.)

ule. To make it easier to cut and assem- ble the module, let’s break up the con- struction and take it a piece at a time. The following directions describe each part. The corresponding letter (shown in parentheses) matches up to the part listed in Table 1, as well as in the ex- ploded drawing (Fig. 1) and the photo of the underside of the module (Fig. 2).

End cap (A): There are two end caps made from a 1″×4″; each end cap is 22½″ long.

Fig. 3

The two slide bars and the two clamp bars are attached to different end caps using 4″ strap hinges. The slide bars are inside the clamp bars. The clamp bars are 5″ from each end of the end cap, but still allow access to the holes to bolt the flexible module to the adjoining mod- ules. You may want to adjust the place- ment of the hinges to fit your modular standards (Fig. 3). Once the clamp bars are attached to the end cap, make sure the clamp bars are at a 90° angle to the both end caps, and the end caps are at 90° to a straight edge. Place the slide bars in between and touching the clamp bars, as shown in the photo, and attach the slide bars (using the 4″ strap hinge) to the other end cap (Fig. 4).

Our module standards require two ³₈″ holes 7″ from the center of the board. For this module, the holes have been elongated in case there are any height issues with the adjoining modules. Your module specifications may differ. Slide bar (B): There are two slide bars 35⁵₈″ long made from 1″×2″s. Slide bar block (C): The 1″×4″

blocks are glued and screwed to the ends of the 1″×2″s as shown in the photo. The block is 4″ to 5″ long. Be sure to leave a gap between the 1″×2″s for ⁵₁₆″ bolts. Clamp bar (D): There are two clamp bars made from 1″×4″s; each one is 36″ long. Beginning approximately 3″ from
