The cattle community is


often close-knit — something cattle thieves rarely grasp. Sale barn employees know who sells what type of cattle. Market in- spectors put in place by Texas and Southwestern Cattle Rais- ers Association (TSCRA) report unusual activity at sale barns and good neighbors often keep track of the comings and goings of absentee ranch owners. Rainbolt didn’t think he’d


been missing any cattle, but when a curious order buyer no- ticed his AH-connected brand in the sale ring, word spread. Soon Rainbolt found himself on the phone with friend who said that 2 AH branded cows and 4 calves had just sold at the East Texas Livestock Market. When Rainbolt arrived


TSCRA Special Ranger Brent Mast met him at the door, along with a Leon County Sheriff’s lieutenant and a Houston County deputy. The 4 men walked down the alleyway to the pens so Rain- bolt could identify his cattle. He recognized one of his cows right away — not only because of the AH brand on her side, but because he’d saved her as a calf from a coyote just after it man- aged to chew off her tail.
